Feeling overwhelmed? Tight on time? Looking for quick ways to declutter your space? Break the task down into smaller projects that take no more than 30 minutes each. This method helps reduce clutter and keeps it under control for longer.
A Few Things to Consider Before You Begin:
- Decluttering comes before organizing. You can’t make informed decisions about what to keep unless you know exactly what you have.
- There’s no “one-size-fits-all” approach. There’s no “right way” or “wrong way”—find what works for you.
- Decluttering is not about tossing everything in the trash. It’s about responsibly discarding items through recycling, reselling/consigning, or donating to local nonprofits or people in need.
- There’s no finish line. Clutter, in some form, will always try to creep back into your home and life.
Dealing with Dirt
A clutter-free home starts with keeping your space clean. Vacuum weekly and make it a habit to put things away immediately—don’t leave items to be sorted later.
To keep your closets and kitchen organized, you must regularly tidy these spaces to maintain a clutter-free environment.
Make Decluttering 10 Times More Manageable
Focus on one main task that brings you closer to your goal. Start with your closet, then move on to your bedroom, and finally tackle the kitchen. To simplify this, I recommend using the Swedish Death Cleaning Method. This involves moving back and forth across a room with a laundry basket, collecting anything that doesn’t belong.
Set three secondary tasks that are easier to tackle than the main goal. These smaller projects should require less time or energy, helping you make progress toward your goal.
Finish off with five small tasks that take minimal effort but help maintain a neat and tidy space.
