The Best Way To Move And Store Furniture

To preserve furniture and prevent damage in both short-term and long-term storage situations, take the time to properly pack, move, and store your furniture.

Moving & Storing Furniture

Whether you’ve sold your home and need some temporary storage until you close on the new home or you have valuable furniture that has been passed down for generations. Self storage is the answer.

Tables, chairs and couches. No matter, self storage is a clean, convenient, and low cost solution for short and long term space. To preserve furniture and prevent damage in both short-term and long-term storage situations, take the time to properly pack, move, and store your furniture.

Move and store your furniture properly. Do it right like the pros do.

  1. First things first. Measure the couch, the dining room table. Anything that is large must be sized prior to the move. This will aid in determining the size storage unit needed as well as how to best move your valuables through narrow hallways and tight doorways.

  2. Make sure you give your furniture a thorough cleaning before moving and storing it away. This will help to prevent deterioration.

    • Be sure to vacuum all fabrics and remove any seating or backings while cleaning.
    • Steam cleaning is an excellent way to remove any spots or stains prior to storage. A mild detergent will also do the trick if there isn’t much to clean.
    • Spray furniture with cleaning sprays before storage and allow to fully dry before moving.

  3. Bag up the couch pillows and cushions once cleaned. Remove any unconnected pieces and legs if there is a need to get through tight space. Place all the screws, nuts, bolts, and other hardware to the furniture in a bag. This will help with the move.

  4. Invest in a sofa storage bag. Protect all of your upholstered furniture from dirt, dust, mildew.

  5. Wrap your furniture with plastic wrap to keep the dresser or cabinet doors closed during transportation. This will protect your valuables from any unintended damage.

  6. Protect the edges of bed frames, tables, mirrors, and large decorations to ensure nothing gets damaged during the move.

  7. Glass table tops should be wrapped in packing paper first and then bubble wrapped around the paper. Now it’s ready to be boxed up and good to go for the move.

  8. Use expandable picture boxes and specially designed boxes for paintings, mirrors, and large flat screen tv’s that don’t fit in a square box. Store these items on the skinny side or next to boxes so that no pressure is applied to the boxed furniture. This will ensure your belongings are not damaged during the move.

When storing furniture, make sure the unit is super clean and well protected from the elements.

  • Indoor units are an excellent choice for any valuable furniture that you need to protect.
  • Make sure the storage unit floors are sealed.
  • Raise the furniture off the floor with pallets to add an extra layer of protection against flooding.
  • Never stack boxes on top of large furniture as it can cause irreparable damage to your furniture.
  • Stand couches and mattresses on end to maximize storage space.
  • Store larger furniture toward the back and side walls of your storage unit.
  • Do not overpack your unit and keep it organized.

Moving furniture incorrectly can permanently damage the piece, either through structural damage or damage to the upholstery.
